The 4C's of Diamonds

Color

The color of a diamond can range from colorless (pure white) to shades of yellow and brown. The closer a diamond is to colorless the more rare and expensive the diamond.
If a diamond is colorless and very transparent, it may be given a "D" color grade. This is the highest color grade in the Gemological Institute of America's (GIA) grading system. The GIA color grading scale is as follows:

D-F
Colorless
G-J
Near
Colorless
K-M
Slightly
Tinted
N-R
Very light
Yellow
S-Z
Light Yellow
to Yellow
However, diamonds that naturally exhibit very intense pure colors, such as blue, red, green and bright yellow are the rarest of all and as such command extraordinarily high prices.

A truly colorless diamond is extremely rare; most diamonds possess various degrees of yellow or brown. Small, subtle differences in color can make a substantial difference in value. Although increasing shades of yellow reduce the value of a diamond, they do not necessarily reduce its beauty. If a diamond is well cut, refraction and dispersion will often disguise certain degrees of coloration.
